Interpreting

Interpreting is sometimes confused with written translation.

Translators write. Interpreters speak.

Interpreting is communication, and to communicate effectively, an interpreter must never stop learning and updating his or her skills.

SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING

Sitting in a booth, interpreters wearing earphones listen to the speakers’ words and translate them instantaneously. The listeners wear earphones to hear the translation in their own language.

For simultaneous interpreting, the venue must therefore have a booth for each language. The booth must be in compliance with ISO 2603 regulations in the case of fixed installations, and ISO 4043 in the case of mobile ones. Each booth must have at least two interpreters.

CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

(no technical systems required)

Consecutive interpreting is suitable for meetings with fewer participants. The interpreter takes notes and translates what was said when the speaker has finished speaking.

WHISPERED

Whispered interpreting, or chuchotage, is translation done by whispering the message’s essential concepts to at most two listeners.

LIAISON INTERPRETING

Liaison interpreting ensures informal understanding for small groups of people, without requiring the techniques of simultaneous or consecutive interpreting.
